After losing her paternal grandmother, Mary Mack Grass Callaway to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in 1985, Sondra Callaway Williamson recognized all too well the tremendous impact this disease has on individuals and their families. Prior to her grandmother’s diagnosis, her health had begun to decline but with no explanation as to why. Unknowingly when she walked into a hospital for tests that would be the last time her family would see her walk or hear her speak. She would be on a ventilator for the remainder of her life. But miraculously, she would never lose the strength in her hands allowing her a means to communicate; a blessing to the many people who loved her, especially her caregiver and husband of fifty-two years.

While there is no known cure, Team Gleason is committed to providing respite care as part of their foundation work. They recognize the physical and mental toll that the disease takes on the caregiver of persons living with ALS and the importance of affording them the time and peace of mind to focus on their own needs and interests. 

Team Gleason was founded by Steve and Michel Gleason after Steve, a former safety for the New Orleans Saints, was diagnosed with ALS in 2011.
